What is a vent stack?
A vent stack is a vertical pipe that releases sewer gas to the outside air while allowing fresh air into the drainage system to maintain proper pressure and trap seals.
Vertical pipes that extend through your roof, vent stacks work alongside your home's drainage system to manage air pressure and gas flow. As water drains from sinks, toilets, and showers, it needs air to replace the space it leaves behind. Without that air entering through the vent stack, drains slow down and create a vacuum that can siphon water out of the P-trap under your sink or toilet. Once the trap loses its water seal, sewer gases back up into your home, causing foul odours and potential health hazards.
Vent stacks also let sewer gas escape safely to the atmosphere rather than build pressure in your pipes. When a vent becomes blocked by debris, bird nests, or ice, the drainage system loses balance. You may notice gurgling sounds from drains, slow drainage, or toilet flushing issues. In Klang Valley's humid climate, roof stacks can accumulate leaves and dirt, especially near trees or during the monsoon season.
