What is thread seal tape?

Thread seal tape, commonly known as PTFE tape or Teflon tape, is a thin white or sometimes slightly translucent plastic film made from polytetrafluoroethylene. Plumbers wrap it around the male threads of pipes or fittings before screwing them into female threaded sockets to create a watertight seal and prevent leaks.

The tape is applied by wrapping it clockwise around the threads, typically two to four layers depending on the pipe diameter and water pressure. As the fitting is tightened, the tape compresses and fills the gaps between the male and female threads, blocking water from seeping through the joint.

Thread seal tape is preferred for connections involving water pipes, gas lines, and low-pressure systems because it is inert, resistant to corrosion, and easy to apply without messy cleanup. It differs from jointing compound (pipe dope), which is a paste-like sealant also used on threaded joints. While thread seal tape works well for most applications, some plumbers combine both methods for extra assurance on critical connections, particularly in older or high-pressure systems.
