What is a stopcock?
A stopcock is an isolation valve that controls the main water supply to a building or individual fixture, allowing you to shut off water flow in emergencies or during repairs.
The stopcock (also called a stop valve or main shut-off valve) is a critical control point in your home's plumbing system. It stops water from flowing into your property by cutting off the supply from the main line where the municipal connection enters your house.
In most Malaysian homes, the stopcock is located near the property boundary or at the point where the water meter sits, often tucked into a small chamber or box at ground level. Some older properties have it inside the house near the kitchen sink or under the bathroom vanity. If you are unsure where yours is, check your meter installation documentation or ask your local water authority (like Syabas in Klang Valley).
You need to use the stopcock when a pipe bursts, when you spot a serious leak you cannot isolate, or before undertaking any plumbing repairs that require the main supply to be off. In emergencies, turning the stopcock clockwise will cut water flow immediately, preventing damage and water wastage.
