What is a solenoid valve?
A solenoid valve is an electrically operated valve that opens or closes automatically to control water flow, often triggered by a float switch to manage tank levels or irrigation timing.
A solenoid valve is a valve controlled by an electromagnetic coil rather than manual operation. When electricity flows through the coil, it creates a magnetic field that pulls a plunger inside the valve, opening or closing the internal passage to allow or stop water flow. In the Klang Valley, these valves are standard in water distribution systems where hands-off automation is needed.
The most common application pairs a solenoid valve with a float switch. As water level rises in a tank, the float rises and triggers an electrical signal that closes the solenoid valve, stopping the incoming water. When the level drops, the float falls, the signal cuts off, and the valve reopens to refill. This setup eliminates the need for manual tank monitoring and prevents overflow.
Irrigation systems also rely on solenoid valves to schedule watering cycles. A timer sends electrical pulses at set times, activating the valve to release water to lines or sprinklers, then deactivating it when the cycle ends. Most models operate on 24-volt DC power, making them safe and energy-efficient for residential and small commercial setups.
The valve body is typically brass or stainless steel to resist corrosion. Sediment or mineral deposits can jam the plunger, so regular strainer maintenance on inlet lines keeps the valve responsive. Installation requires a power supply line alongside the water line, adding modest cost but returning savings through reduced water waste and labor.
