What is PEX piping?
PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is a flexible plastic pipe used for water supply and heating systems, connected with crimp fittings and requiring specialized tools to install.
PEX stands for cross-linked polyethylene, a durable plastic tubing that has become standard in plumbing systems across residential and light commercial installations. Unlike rigid copper or PVC pipe, PEX bends around obstacles and through wall cavities, reducing the number of fittings needed and speeding up rough-in work. The piping is available in coils, typically red for hot water and blue for cold water, making system identification straightforward on site.
Installation uses a crimping method rather than soldering or threaded connections. A plumber inserts a fitting (usually brass or plastic) into the PEX end and compresses a crimp ring around it with a dedicated crimp tool, creating a watertight seal. This approach requires less training than soldering and produces consistent joints that resist corrosion and vibration.
PEX works well for point-of-use water heaters, underfloor radiant heating loops, and main water supply distribution in homes where flexibility saves labor time. However, rigid pipe such as copper or PVC remains preferred for trunk lines in commercial buildings, underground main feeds where UV exposure is a concern, or where codes specifically require it. Temperature rating typically maxes out around 82 degrees Celsius, so it is not suitable for near-boiler applications without additional tubing.
