What is a non-return valve?

A non-return valve, also called a check valve, is a mechanical device that allows water to flow through in one direction while blocking any reverse flow. It contains an internal flapper or ball mechanism that opens under forward pressure and closes automatically when flow stops or reverses.

In Klang Valley residential and commercial plumbing, these valves are standard fittings after water pumps and storage tanks. When a pump pushes water upward into a tank or elevated system, the non-return valve sits on the outlet to prevent stored water from draining back down the pump when power cuts or the pump stops. This protects the pump from damage and maintains system pressure.

A faulty non-return valve loses its seal, allowing water to siphon backward. You may notice reduced water pressure at outlets, or the pump running repeatedly to maintain tank levels even when no water is being used. In worst cases, stagnant water pools in the pump intake, accelerating corrosion and reducing pump life.

Regular inspection of non-return valves is part of routine water tank and pump maintenance. Lime scale buildup in hard-water areas can stick the internal mechanism, requiring cleaning or replacement. Most plumbers recommend checking these valves annually in systems over five years old.
