What is a grease trap?

A grease trap is a plumbing interceptor that separates fats, oils, and grease from wastewater before it reaches the municipal sewer system.

A grease trap is a containment device installed in the drainage system between a kitchen or food service sink and the main sewer line. It works by slowing wastewater flow so that grease, oil, and fat cool and solidify, rising to the surface where they collect in a chamber. Lighter solids and food particles sink to the bottom, while cleaner water passes through to the drainage system.

These interceptors are required for most commercial kitchens, food courts, restaurants, and catering facilities across the Klang Valley. Any business producing regular volumes of fatty or oily wastewater must install one to comply with local council regulations and environmental standards. Residential installations are less common but sometimes necessary in older properties with drainage issues.

Regular maintenance is essential: grease traps must be emptied and cleaned before they become overfilled, typically every 1 to 3 months depending on usage. When not maintained, trapped grease hardens and can cause blockages in your own pipes or create costly problems further down the municipal sewer line. Many local authorities in Klang Valley impose fines for failing to maintain traps or discharging grease directly into public sewers.

If your business generates grease-heavy wastewater, plumbers can assess your drainage setup and install an appropriately sized trap for your kitchen. Regular drain maintenance and unclogging services are also important for preventing backups when grease accumulates.
